2 of 2 people found this review useful User Rating 6.3 Out of 10 The phone reflects (largely) the kind of good product management we've seen from Palm over the years-- this one has all of the bells-and-whistles you'd expect in a Treo. However, there are a couple of points that seem an entire lapse in judgment.
The battery life is terrible. I've read all the various comments about how to improve it, etc., including the snarky ones about "putting it down for 2 seconds". Bottom line: the battery life is WOEFULLY inadequate for a device aimed at this target. If this is supposed to be "The Treo for Business": FAIL.
THE BAD:
Even with everything other than the phone turned off (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, push-mail, background programs, etc.) the battery life is disappointing. Without making any calls, if the phone comes off the charger about 9:00 AM, it'll be dead about 7:00 PM or so. If, Heaven-forbid, you turn on any of the features they sell the phone on, it will be dead far sooner.
For someone that's owned a 600, 650, and 700 previously and knows what kind of battery life could be expected from the prior models (yes, don't quibble about PalmOS v WinMo), this is insane.
It's fine to tell the user that an extra battery will handle the problem, but that's not how the product is designed: it does not ship with an extra battery, nor with a charger capable of charging a second battery, meaning you're incurring the additional expense of correcting an enormous design oversight.
I ordered a seemingly problem-solving battery from Seidio-- more than double the capacity with a replacement battery door. Unfortunately, the battery didn't work-- either the battery was bad (Seidio sent me a replacement with the same result), or the Treo just didn't like it. It often wouldn't power up, or the battery would go from showing full to showing empty and the phone would shutdown. Still don't know if this battery may make this phone super-viable.
Also, I've found the call clarity to be awful-- bad even for Treos.
The device has some real quirks: lockups, unexpected shutdowns, more frequently than one could even blame on Windows.
THE GOOD:
The size and weight of the device are great, obviously-- since the battery is tiny.
The display is really clear even in sunlight (much appreciated if you've eyed the HTC Touch Diamond).
The stereo bluetooth works really well-- the first positive Bluetooth experience I've had with a Treo.
The communications stuff (SMS) is still well-handled. The absence of true MMS is pretty easily circumvented with software for WinMo that facilitates PictureMail.
The keyboard is a progressive improvement for Treos-- and this is obviously a strong suit for the Treo. I tried a touchscreen phone very briefly-- my reaction: "Are you !@%!@ing kidding me?!"
OVERALL:
My experience with the battery, the call clarity, and the quirky lockups and shutdowns was enough for me to try another phone (The HTC Touch Diamond) temporarily (more FAIL). I think if the Treo Pro was available on Sprint, I'd be writing a review of that right now.

It would be a 10 across the board if it wasn't for battery life and the QUIRKY things. Why PALM put such a pathetic battery in this is beyond me. You need to shut off the wifi or it will drain the battery quickly. Shutting off bluetooth when not in use helps also. With those things off you get a good 8-10 hours out of it. I use it all day long for business (email, im, phone).
Still trying to figure out if it is the Mobile 6.1 or the Treo itself that is quirky. My quess its the Mobile 6.1 since the PALM OS was rock solid. If you use the GPS a few times in a row, add a new program or don't exit programs correctly, your email and sync will not work. Thus you need to reboot by pulling the battery out. Same thing if you use Task Manager to clean up applications you didn't exit correctly. ATTN PALM: With all these quirks an ON/OFF or RESET button would be nice!!! While I am at it why in the world would you put the IR sensor on the side? Should be on the top where you can actually use it. Guess you don't want the Real Estate Agents to buy this?
The quirky things are annoying but tolerable. I reset about every other day, small price to pay for such a powerful PDA/PC. The screen is super sharp (much improved over the 700 Treo), looks fantastic, easy to use and the GPS also works great. Internet Explorer is finally usable because of the crystal clear screen. Email and Text is also great. The Treo text feature looks like an IM which is a very nice feature. The Sync feature also works better than previous PALM OS.
One upgrade I recommend is the combination Pen/Stylus by Seidio. It feels better and you always have a pen. I am constantly looking for something to write with.

The Treo 800w is the perfect tool for business. It does everything my laptop does just on a smaller screen. I use a MacBook and a Vista desktop with MobileMe and everything syncs perfectly. The Treo 800w is well designed and the software functions well from 3rd parties. Buy a second battery or plug the phone into the laptop and turn and burn.

Battery life is the worse ever. I had to charge it two or three times a day. What is the point of having a cellphone if you can not count on it. It is a lot prettier and feels a lot better than others Treo, and it is a great size but the battery is UNACCEPTABLE. After trying it for two weeks, unfortunately I had to change it. I got the Instinct and so far I'm very happy.
